"Camera Returned!" Story, Pt 2

Need your help, folks!

With the help of a Japanese pal, I called the number for the guy who returned my camera. Upon 2 calls, there was no answer except for voicemail. After the second call, my friend left a brief message, explaining who was calling--but the voicemail cut off before completing the full effect of my thanks.

What should I do?

My friend suggests that I could simply send the guy a gift whether he wants it or not. (In addition to his phone number, I have an address.) Assuming I could find a service to do so, I was thinking a 6-pack of beer. Seems a fitting summer gift in Japan for a guy.

Other options include: B) nothing. The effort was made. C) Try calling back again at a different time of day. D) ____(your_suggstion_goes_here)____

My suggestion would be to call again and to see if you could speak with him. If you get the voicemail, I would leave a proper "thank you," then I would send a box of some sweets.

I think that's more than plenty... I actually think you do not need to send him anything. If you feel really appreciative, you could send a gift, but I don't think he expects that much from you.

Anyways, congrats on getting your camera back!

I will choose to send him some gift directly. I think it is more in Tokyo style: polite but with distance.

Beer, with an appreciating card will be ok I guess. What I am worrying about is: are they still fresh when arrived....? :P

It was so great your camera returned!

If you really appreciate him and want to express something.. C) try!
And if you hear still the voicemail, then send something!
Do you know "ビール券(けん)" : prepaid cards for beer? You can buy them at a liquor shop, put them into an envelope with your thanks letter and post it as a mail, he would know how much you spent, though. There some kinds of "prepaid ... card" such as only used at department stores, for rice..etc, you can choose!

lance! ruthanne here! (remember me? i got to you via cb...)

anyway, i say go with the beer - but 12, not 6, unless beer is really expensive and cameras are really cheap in japan.

i know that if someone here in canada were to return my camera, a 2-4 of moosehead would not be unwarranted!

Regardless what society you are living in, the act of, and effort given to thanking a person should be equal to, or larger than their effort which you are thanking them for. Leaving a voice mail is nice, however, I also think something tangible is appropriate. The gift card concept seems quite nice, whereby you are providing the funding, and the guy get to choose according to his personal taste.
It would have been nice if the guy took a picture of himself on your camera! Why don't you also send a picture of yourself from the camera he returned! Dad
