Beekeroo chimes in with a simple question: Do the Japanese leave their bikes unlocked in the street?
Do you lock your bike, Lance? Do you think the Japanese, as a society, have a better respect for others' personal property left unlocked in public?
The bikes are locked, usually.. sort of. I mean, the locks are super flimsy. My lock is mostly plastic--I could cut through the inner metal wire with a good pair of scissors. I guess they serve mostly as deterrants to stop drunk people.
Part of the security could be that most bikes are super cheap here. People ride slow, and they don't need a expensive bike, so there's no expensive bikes, so there's no bike theives. But I think the biggest part is that each bike has a security number, which is registered with the police at the store when you buy it.
